Supporting Women’s Wrongs: Defending Hated Female Anime Characters

It’s Women’s History Month, and I support women's wrongs. Now more than ever, there are so many hated female anime characters. They cry too much, are annoying, or said a bad thing one time. Other times they are good people who did bad things. To me it doesn't matter because women can simply never be wrong. BUT if they are, they looked good doing it. (For the record there are actually some horrible characters in anime that we will never dare defend.)

This article may contain spoilers for each respective show….so just scroll to the next character!

Isabella - The Promised Neverland

Yes, she sent hundreds of kids off to get eaten by demons, but she’s not that bad! Honestly, if more people picked up the manga instead of watching season 2 this would be much easier to explain. Isabella is a character who did the best that she could in the circumstances she was in. She lived in a kill-or-be-killed world. Now, I can't defend the “adoptions” of the kids, but I get it. Isabella did everything she could to give her kids the best possible life in the circumstances. And the circumstances were pretty fucking grim.

There was no possible way to escape, as she saw for herself, but once one was presented, she was there for them. She worked to the top and did the right thing when the time came. With this logic, even Sister Krone is valid. But please don’t just take my word for it. I am begging everyone to pick up the manga to read this masterpiece as intended!

Hachiko - Nana

The crybaby hero on our list is the heartless romantic Hachiko. Hachi is constantly getting hate for her not-so-smart romantic decisions. Did I yell at the screen with every dumb choice she made? Well, yes. Honestly, It took a few re-watches for her to grow on me. Then I realized how much like me she is. And it may just be the same for her haters. Hachi is just a girl. She is a girl in love with her celebrity crush. Frankly, if Hozier was my roommate's, boyfriend's bandmate, I TOO would turn into a dumb bitch. With situationships running rampant, people are too bold to hate Hachi for something they would do too.

When it comes to romance, we all fall flat on our faces. Why are you hating someone who hasn’t gotten it right yet? Please note that Hachi was groomed when she was in high school, so her desire for romance is understandable. She is also in a terrible situation with Takumi with all the intersecting relationships in the groups. Let’s not judge or hate Hachi as if we all don’t do "dumb" things for love.

Junko - Nana

While on Nana, why does Junko get nearly as much hate as Takumi and Reira? I could write an entire article about how Junko gets more hate than she should, but we don’t have time for that. What many people fail to realize is that Junko was a friend to both Shoji and Hachiko. But she has always been team Hachiko. The moment she found out he cheated, she scolded Shoji and threatened him to tell Hachi before she got hurt. She gave Shoji the choice to do the right thing and let Hachi down easily. It’s also important to note that the time between her finding out vs Hachi was maybe a day or so.

You may say, “I need my friend to tell me as soon as she finds out.” Hachi is very clearly not that type of girl. If Junko told her and not Shoji, she would be more upset, and honestly would not believe her. Junko knows this, as they’ve been friends for over 6 years. Her one true fault was making the comment on Hachi being to blame for the cheating. Though Hachi did have faults in the relationship, it wasn't the time and place. Later, Junko acknowledges her bluntness and feels bad about it. Junko is not the pick me, anti girl's girl you want her to be. She cares about her friend's safety and well-being and did what she genuinely thought was best. So, stop the Junko hate, and focus on the characters that deserve it REIRA & TAKUMI!!!!!

Anya - Spy x Family

Technically, she isn’t a woman, but the hate Anya gets for being a child is insane. I have seen Anya dubbed "The most annoying MC.” or  “Worst Character in her show.” more times than I can count. Meanwhile, characters her age, Boji and Kotoro, get praise. You can say Anya is annoying, but name one MC that wasn’t annoying when they were a kid? Anya lived neglected in the early parts of her life. We shouldn't be hating her for her loud gestures and bold personality.

Instead, we should be grateful that she can be her true self without fear. (The whole mind-reading secret aside of course.) Unlike other characters, she’s not selfish and does her best to make those around her happy. And if she is, again she is a child. While there is not as much Anya hate as there used to be, any hate for this precious child makes me want to support any and all of her wrongs!

Nami - One Piece

You’d think a bad bitch wouldn’t have haters but alas. Finding out Nami had haters took me for a shock. People still grudge against Nami because of what happened in Arlong Park, one of the first arcs in the show. So many people say that she has no reason to still be money-hungry. If you saved up billions for years only to be tricked by Arlong, you too would have money insecurity. She spent her whole life, saving money it is about time for her to use it for what she wants.

Those who don’t hate her for her money think she brings nothing to the Straw hats. I’m not sure if you’ve skipped a few episodes, but they would be dead without her. Dare I say Nami commands the ship more than Luffy does. She knows the weather conditions and the seas, and her navigation skills are elevated when Jimbe and Franky join in. Nami can also hold her own in her fights. Sure she’s not the strongest, but she has the spirit and skill to stay alive.

Sakura - Naruto

If you thought the QUEEN, the LEGEND, the ICON, Sakura Haruno wouldn’t be on this list, you’d be wrong! Sakura is one of the most hated female anime characters. I think people forget we met the Konoha 11 when they were around 12 years old. All of them were annoying and prideful, even Shino! And yet, we focus on Sakura. “But she made fun of an orphan in front of an orphan”. SHUT UP. Literally shut up. She was 12 and wanted a boy in her class to like her. Please be serious. Sasuke even put her in her place immediately after. “She told Naruto she loved him and lied.” Baby you’re projecting. You saw yourself in Naruto and felt Sakura's rejection. And the thing is, that is okay. What’s not okay is to throw away all Sakura's accomplishments because she “wronged” a fictional character who has already forgiven her.

Too many people still have this grudge against her for something that happened in OG Naruto. I don’t know about you, but I’m in Boruto and no one cares about what she said as a kid. And, let's leave the phrase “Sakura is useless.” behind. Why is she deemed useless because she doesn’t have magical eyes or a demon inside of her? Did she not save countless lives in the war? Does she not save lives as head of the hospital in Konoha? And did she not save Naruto’s life by pumping his heart with her own hands? Sakura hate will never be tolerated.

This women's history month, let's spread some love to ALL female anime characters not just the hated female anime characters. Whether they're from a shonen or a shojo, these characters have made an impact on our lives. Let's turn away from hatred and appreciate these complex characters. Support their wrongs even! Let us know which hated female anime characters you would defend below!

Preach! I love the article so much.
Here are characters in anime/manga who I believe don’t deserve the hate
1) Momo Adachi, the protagonist of the series, is already going through. I feel by the end of the series she does grow because she learns to love and accept herself regardless of what others think or say about her regardless of her appearance. She learns to find love and forgive others as well(whether it be her love interests, Kazuya Tojigamori aka Toji and Kairi Okayasu) or her frienemy Sae Kashiwagi. She doesn’t deserve all the hate but people believe she could have made better decisions(which I agree with) yet you can say the same thing to Toji, Kairi, and Sae!
2) Kazuya Tojiagmori, one of Momo’s love interests is kind, forgiving, and understanding. I understand why people weren’t fond of Kazuya and that’s because he would believe Sae’s words over Momo’s but at the same time, he loved, cared and didn’t let Momo second guess her love, unlike Kairi. Kazuya always thought of Momo and wanted what was best for her. Kairi also wanted the best for Momo, but the whole time, he was in love with Misao, making Momo second place in their relationship in both the anime and in Peach Girl Next(which I was not fond of).
3) Tohru Honda from Fruits Baskets, I’m not sure why she gets hate in the first place from people but I know I love Tohru and I love fruit baskets as a whole!
Ps: I was just wondering if series like Peach Girl and Chihayafuru will be included in future articles along with tropes that you like/dislike and anime series that you believe could collaborate.
For me, I always wanted to see a Peach Girl and Ouran High School Host Club collab because I feel that both Tamaki and Kairi would get along since they have flirtatious/playboy energy. Sae and Kyouya might get along or pretend to get along but Kyouya will be able to see through Sae’s tricks. Momo would get along with Honey-senpai and Toji I could see him getting along with Mori-senpai!
Have a great day and take care
