11 Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Tips for Beginners

Half of the fun of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is the chaos that unfolds when your favorite verses collide, but the other half is seeing your island thrive! Here are some tips to help you get started on your island – including how to speed up relationship progression, a guide for the pondering bubbles, and avoiding a major mistake that will freeze your shops for 24 hours.

1. Stuck Mii?

When a Mii gets stuck (and they will often!), don’t fix the problem yourself – use it as a match-making opportunity. Drag a Mii you want them to bond with over to help out. This gives their relationship an instant boost as the stuck Mii will feel grateful. You can drag Miis toward each other anytime to nudge them into an interaction – doing this often is the fastest way to progress their friendship or spark a romance. There’s even a chance that the Mii that’s stuck will fall in love with the Mii that helped them at first sight!

2. Keep leveling up!

The best way to level up your island is to make more Mii’s and raise their happiness level! The higher your island level, the more features you can unlock at the fountain – new hobbies, shops (clothing, room decoration, hang-out spots etc), and quirks to make your Mii’s feel more alive.

3. Solve problems, get warm fuzzies

The best way to get warm fuzzies (to level your fountain and unlock new features) is to solve your Mii’s ponderings aka the bubbles/status icons. You’ll gain happiness, money, and warm fuzzies. Give them food they like or rub their head daily to get more.

4. How to cheer a Mii up

If a Mii is depressed, they often stay in their room and don’t want to interact with others. You can cheer them up by giving them food or gifts they like. Mii’s don’t like eating the same food back to back, so make sure you switch it up.

5. Be mindful of status icons

Yellow bubble: A general bubble indicating that they want something like different clothes or room decor, or maybe they just want to learn more about you!

Pink bubble: A romance bubble! They may have feelings for another Mii, and you will be able to encourage, shut down, or let them decide for themselves.

Orange bubble: A friendship bubble indicating their interest in building a friendship with another Mii, or want advice from you on whether they make a good pairing.

Blue lines over their head: This indicates sadness, bring their sadness meter down by giving them food they like or a gift.

Purple triangles above their head: This indicates that they’re stuck and need help! Drag another Mii over to boost their friendship or relationship.

Flashing green bars above their head: This indicates their interest in playing a mini game. There are many quick and fun games, such as Red Light, Green Light; Guess the Shadow; and No Repeats. If you win, you get to pick one of three prizes.

Yellow squiggly marks: They’ve been watching someone and want to meet them or are curious about something.

Flashing yellow bars above their head: This indicates they have a request for you.

ZZZ bubble: Dream bubble, click to see what they’re dreaming about! They can manifest items in their dreams.

6. Watch Miis while they sleep, trust me!

Mii’s can dream – so if you see a sleeping bubble over them make sure to click on it! Their dreams can manifest items that you can either sell or gift. Free items!

7. Play Cupid

Don’t give up if your match-making goes awry! Unrequited love can turn to mutual love if you make them interact often. A good way to avoid rejection is to make sure the Mii’s get to know each other first before confessing. Mii’s that fall out of love can also fall back in love. Just keep dragging them over to meet up!

8. Don’t forget the night market

Check your night market daily! The mystery bag can have clothes, food, room decor, and gifts – at a good value for all the items.

9. In game photography

Hold the ZR button down to take screenshots without the UI for a cleaner look. While Tomodachi Life doesn’t allow you to upload the screenshots into your Nintendo mobile app, you can use an SD card to retrieve the screenshots.

10. Want to change it up?

Changed your mind about the name of your island? Open the menu with X and select island info – there you’ll be able to edit and change the name.

11. Don’t cheat time

Do not try to time travel/change the time on your Switch to advance to the next day for progression!! All the shops will freeze for 24 hours and the Mii’s hunger won’t update.

At the end of the day, your island is what you make of it! Whether you’re mischievously playing cupid to see your favorite rarepair thrive or taking the back seat and letting your Mii’s live out their lives, I hope these tips can make your experience a little smoother. Happy island-building!!
