The Story

In the world of Magical Girl Dandelion, monstrous fiends feed on the life energy of humans, while magical girls act as humanity’s defense force. In this world, magic appears to be innate. You’re either born with it or you aren’t. A magical girl’s powers “blossom” suddenly once she becomes strong enough to wield them. When this happens, she is recruited into an organization that exists to protect humans from fiends.

The twist? Our magical girl, Tanpopo, is secretly best friends with a fiend named Shade, something that needs to remain hidden from the organization.

The relationship between Tanpopo and Shade is really the heart of this manga. Tanpopo is brave, optimistic, and determined to save people, while Shade is secretive, edgy, and looks like he stepped straight out of the early-2000s emo aesthetic. Their dynamic, the sunshine magical girl paired with a snarky shadow creature, is incredibly fun.

A lot happens in this first volume.

We learn how Tanpopo and Shade first met, what it’s been like for Tanpopo growing up with a fiend that no one else can see as her best friend, and we see the moment when Tanpopo’s own magical powers finally bloom which immediately puts her at odds with Shade.

The pacing is quite fast, as the early chapters juggle a lot of setup and worldbuilding. However, it never feels like a heavy info-dump. If anything, the story left me with more questions that I’m hoping later volumes will answer: Why is Shade attached to Tanpopo? Why did he choose to save her in the first place? What is Shade hiding? And will Tanpopo eventually be able to save Shade from himself?

Magical Girl Dandelion ends its first volume on a strong note that makes you eager to keep reading. It feels like the magical girl series fans have been hoping for. It’s refreshing and electric.

The Art

This series has truly excellent character design. So excellent, in fact, that an entire fandom blossomed around this series before it was even released. Tanpopo’s adorable design and warm color palette juxtaposed to Shade’s sharp and dark design makes them the perfect duo visually. And don’t worry, the character’s look just as good on the page as they do on the cover.

This series has fun action sequences that aren’t just filled with magical energy beams and bokeh effects, but actual fight scenes that feel equally grounded and harrowing. At times the quick pacing can make things a little confusing between scenes, but this first volume has an energy that’s sure to hook you.
