Daemons of the Shadow Realm: Manga Review

Synopsis

Yuru begins Daemons of the Shadow Realm living a relatively peaceful existence in a remote village. He hunts, wanders the mountains, and spends his free time trying to entertain his younger sister Asa. Asa is mysteriously confined for reasons that aren’t fully explained to the reader. But when armed outsiders suddenly attack the village, Yuru’s entire understanding of his life collapses.

The Story

Daemons of the Shadow Realm kicks off with a very exciting first chapter. The plot wastes no time throwing readers into the chaos. Explosive action sequences, supernatural creatures and shocking plot twists pile on top of each other almost immediately, making for an incredibly engaging opening. And isn’t it always exciting when a protagonist realizes that their whole life has been built on a pile of carefully constructed lies? 

That being said, Yuru handles these wild revelations with a bizarre level of ease. Major discoveries that would completely destabilize most people barely seem to shake him. Though this probably comes down to the story prioritizing momentum over realism. And to be fair this plot moves! Arakawa clearly wants readers moving from one twist to the next without getting too bogged down in the details.

The story never feels like an info-dump, but unfortunately the fast pace, increasingly convoluted lore, and rapid introduction of characters starts to become deeply confusing. It could benefit from slowing down a tad and spending extra time acclimating its readers. 

Despite the strong opening chapter, the story swerves and starts to feel like a shonen paint-by-numbers, complete with demon class rankings and half-baked destinies. Personally, while I enjoyed the opening immensely, I’m not fully sold on continuing after volume one. However, readers who enjoy action-driven fantasy with a balance of humor, high-energy combat, and sprawling lore will probably have a fantastic time with this one.

The Art

If there’s one thing Hiromu Arakawa consistently delivers, it’s strong artwork. Her style might not feature the widest range of faces, but she more than compensates with expressive movements and detailed environments. 

The action scenes are expertly choreographed, and after Fullmetal Alchemist, who’s really surprised? While some mangaka struggle to keep chaotic fight scenes from feeling disorienting, Arakawa never has an issue making the flow of action readable and energetic. I also have to applaud the background art. Arakawa makes her characters feel grounded in a fully realized setting, which helps the entire story come to life.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm is a critically acclaimed fantasy manga series written by legendary mangaka, Hiromu Arakawa, the same author who brought us Fullmetal Alchemist and The Heroic Legend of Arslan. Square Enix has 10 volumes currently out and available for English readers with more on the way soon. The anime adaptation is also available to watch as of April 2026.
