The Apothecary Diaries: Season 2 Highlights

The Apothecary Diaries Season two is finally complete, and there are some moments we need to discuss! This season was full of twists, surprises, and frogs??? I have not been this gagged by an anime in a while. The Apothecary Diaries does a great job of telling a story full of twist, drama, and romance.

This article will have major spoilers for The Apothecary Diaries Season 2

Shisui’s introduction

The introduction of Shisui has got to be one of the craziest introductions to such an important character. Well, I guess this isn’t our first introduction. Shisui was on screen for less than a minute in her first episode. The mysterious girl who appeared out of nowhere was bright and a perfect fit for the now-trio. Shisui did such a good job of being fun and memorable, but also forgettable. When she would pop up, I was always like “Oh yeah, she’s fun!” and that worked so well for the story!

Shenmei

I’ve never seen somebody ruin their own life so bad and proceed to take down everyone around them. Shenmei’s actions in Apothecary Diaries season two had me gagged… but not in the good way in the I wanna puke way. She constantly let her pride get in the way of her own happiness. She often had the better end of a deal and still found a way to make her situation worse. Shenmei treats everyone around her like scum. Plus, her actions towards the honorable women of the house were vile. In the end, I am happy that she was the reason for her own death

Guns???

Maybe I’m just crazy, but I was not expecting the VIOLENCE. When the first gunshot went off, I was taken by surprise. Admittedly, I wasn’t one for the politics and practices of the show, but I had no choice but to lock in once I realized that people of importance ACTUALLY have a hit on them! Silly, yes, I know, but the introduction of the feifas and the battle at the end really piqued my interest. I hope the show dives deeper into that aspect in the next season!

The Shrine of Choosing

First, the Emperor is so chill?? I truly expected him to be a hidden mean, unspoken guy. But the more we see him, the more he grows on me. Not only that, BUT HE SHIPS JINSHI AND MAOMAO! Okay, okay, maybe I’m reaching a bit, but he knows something is up. During the Shrine of Choosing, it is clear to everyone in the room that Jinshi needs Maomao. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Shrine of Choosing comes back later in the series. I also appreciate how they incorporated color blindness into the story.

The cave scene

I think we were all collectively GAGGED during this entire scene. After escaping death, Maomao and Jinshi are stuck alone in a cave. Whatever will they do? Well, nothing and everything at the same time. When Jinshi pulled Maomao back into his embrace after the fall, time stood still. (Sure felt like it while waiting for the next episode.) Jinshi is trying his best to tell her about his identity (and feelings?), only to be met by a very unwilling Maomao. So much was secretly exposed in this scene, but I’m just a humble blog writer who will mind my business.

Back from the dead alive

One thing I LOVE about this show is how things will always come back into play! Though we don’t see the children too often, except for Kyou-u, the fact that their deaths were sealed was sad. They’re children, they didn’t deserve to die because of matters that didn’t concern them. While I hoped that the resurrection medicine was at play here, once they were wrapped up, my hope vanished. Honestly, I’m not even upset that the Jinshi & Maoao scene was interrupted by their resurrection!

Shisui’s Reveal

Yes, Shisui/Lolan is mentioned twice in this article because she was just SO iconic. I hope I wasn’t the only one utterly gagged by the fact that Shisui, our new best friend, was indeed concubine Lolan??? Her actions in the Rear Palace alone were amazing. Having ladies in waiting who all looked similar to her on standby while she could be normal is genius. My first impression of Lolan was nothing like my impression of Shisui. I fully expected her to just be a pretty and reserved concubine. Outside of the rear palace, her ability to protect those she loved despite the near-certain death they faced is admirable. Lolan took so many risks, and they all paid off. I think her biggest gag in Apothecary Diaries Season two was the finale. If anyone could make it out of that situation, of course, it’s her!

I am so sad that it’s a wrap on The Apothecary Diaries Season two, but there were tons of great moments! What moments did I miss from this season let me know below!
